2019 Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match

28th Quigley Shoot is History

The question of the day may be- “What is the fourth largest town in Rosebud County, with a population between 1000 and 1500, cannot be found on Google Maps, and only is inhabited about two weeks a year”?
The answer is Quigleyville! Located about seven miles north of Forsyth on the Lee Ranch.
The Forsyth Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc. has hosted this rifle match for the past twenty-eight years and hosted literally hundreds, if not thousands, of shooters from around the world.
The Matthew Quigley Buffalo Rifle Match is the oldest and largest shoot of its’ kind in the world. Originally conceived by Al Lee and Earnie Cornett after they and their spouses went to Miles City years ago and attended the movie “Quigley Down Under”, starring Tom Sellack.
This year’s Champion of the Quigley, or the Q as Buz Coker fondly called it, was won by Shane Kraft of Baldwin, North Dakota with an impressive score of 43.
The course of fire consists of forty-eight shots fired at six targets; the largest being a 5’ by 7’ buffalo at approximately 805 yards to a bucket at approximately 350 yards. (Matthew Quigley didn’t have a tape measure)! No sighter shots are allowed at this match. All but the offhand bucket shots are made from sitting crossed sticks.
Shiloh Sharps of Big Timber Montana has generously donated rifles since the second match. C. Sharps Arms/Kenn Womack/Treebone Carving, Italian Firearms Group, the family of Jim Wilcox, and the Forsyth Rifle and Pistol Club Inc have also donated rifles and or gift certificates towards firearms to door prize winners over the years.
Thanks to all of the Rifle Club members for their help and support and to local businesses that put on special events during the week. Mike and Lynn Blakesley of the Roxy had a free showing of the hit movie “True Grit” to a boisterous crowd of rabid John Wayne fans!
The Quigley- often copied but never bested!
